Burgess playing for Fulham |
Just as many Iron fans began to get jittery due to the club not announcing any signings, we got what we had all been eager for.
Highly-rated Cameron Burgess joins United on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee, from Championship side Fulham.
The 21-year-old centre back comes in and fills in the void centre back space which was created when David Mirfin left the club.
Burgess was on loan with League One rivals Oldham Athletic for the first half of last season, where he made a total of 31 appearances for the Latics, including the 2-0 victory over the Iron in October.
The youngster would then move to Oldham’s rivals Bury for the remainder of the season, where he was pivotal in helping Lee Clark’s side avoid relegation to League Two.
Burgess is part of the Australian national team youth set up, despite being born in Scotland, and has seven caps for the under-23s side.
After signing his three-year deal with us, Burgess said: “I’m absolutely delighted,”
“I’m just glad to get it sorted and I’m raring to go for the season already. The main goal for the season is promotion.
“That’s my main reason for signing for the club and I’m excited to get started and hopefully achieve that next season.”
Graham Alexander was also delighted to get his man, and stated: “Cameron ticks a lot of boxes for us, he has great stature and can play.”
“He had a full season last year at Bury and at Oldham, and showed what he’s about.
“He’s coming in at a great age and his motivation to come in and do well was there for us when we spoke to him. We’re delighted to get him on board.”
The Iron were linked with another Fulham youngster yesterday, as the Scunthorpe Telegraph claimed that United had a bid rejected for striker George Williams.

Elsewhere, BBC Humberside reporter Mike White has had it confirmed that their is a huge interest from Alexander in signing out-of-contract Bradford City defender Rory McArdle.

McArdle was a stalwart for the Bradford City side that boasted one of the best defences in League One last season, and would be a great replacement for Mirfin in terms of experience, and quality.
Finally, United are rumoured to still be keen on re-signing Rangers midfielder Matt Crooks, who impressed whilst on loan with us last season.

Reports in Scotland suggest that a move for Crooks may be long-winded, but it’s great news to hear that we are in for a player of his quality.
If there are any more solid rumours, or signing announcements in the coming days, we will post it all on the site. Keep an eye out on our social media platforms.
Up The Iron.
