As any eagle-eyed Scunthorpe fan will have noticed that this weekend – the Iron were not in action in League One: and as a result, have slipped a place in the table.
This was owing to Sheffield Wednesday’s involvement in the FA Cup 3rd Round: forcing the clash to be re-arranged, and now it looks like it’ll be their Steel City rivals pulling the same trick.
With the Iron’s home game against the Owls having been forced to be re-arranged to Tuesday 24th January, as Gary Megson’s side take on Sam Allardyce’s Championship pace-setters West Ham United in the FA Cup this afternoon.
This is after the South Yorkshire based Blades beat Salisbury City in the FA Cup 3rd Round yesterday, and will progress to the 4th Round of the oldest cup competition in the world.
That date had been due to take place on Saturday 28th January, which is of course the same date for both clashes.
And under the FA’s agreement with the Football League – the former’s competition must take precedent over the latter.
As such, the Iron’s away trip to Danny Wilson’s high-flying Blades has been forcibly called off by both clubs – hopefully at the minimum disruption possible to all fans concerned.
This author is particularly lucky, currently living in Sheffield and using the free Saturday as an excuse to go and watch Spurs – hopefully any other Iron fans will be as fortunate!
There has, as yet, not been a date announced for when the match will be re-arranged for, but expect it to be a Tuesday in February – as the Iron will be absolutely desperate to keep up their simply wonderful recent record against Sheff United.
And believe me, this part of the Any Old Iron team would be massively bloody delighted if the Steel Town gave the Steel City another good thrashing!
As soon as the date for the re-arranged clash has been confirmed then we’ll have it up on here as well.
Hope to see you all there – and Up the Iron!
