REPORT: Scunthorpe show interest in Nantwich Town non-league star

The Iron are reported to have made contact with Nantwich Town striker Joe Malkin – offering the youngster the chance to train with the United first team for a week.

The 20-year-old is highly-rated in the non league footballing world, and was rewarded for an impressive season when he was announced as the Evo-Stik Premier’s Young Player of the Season.

Scunthorpe are not the only club said to be interested in Malkin, although they are the only named side said to be interested.

The link comes via Nantwich’s local press at Cheshire Live, with reporter Peter Morse tweeting out the story this morning.

Nantwich director of football Clive Jackson has also spoken about the Iron’s interest, when he said:

“There’s lots of interest. Scunthorpe invited him to train for a week.

“There have been no firm bids for Joe yet so we expect him to play against Crewe (on Saturday) unless something changes.

“If he does stay with us next season we think he can become one of the best players and the hottest properties in non-league.

“We’ll help him develop further and he will help our team.”

Malkin was reported to have been taken on trial by Championship side Blackburn Rovers at the end of April.

So far, United have Kyle Wootton, Olufela Olomola Lee Novak and Kevin van Veen as their only recognised senior strikers heading into the League Two season in August.
