Newcastle striker Toney wants to repay ‘great’ Iron fanbase with an abundance of goals

Now in his second loan spell with the club, Ivan Toney is keen to use Saturday’s goal as a way of pushing on to find the net more frequently.

The Iron had thrown away a two-goal lead against ten-man Fleetwood, but Toney’s stunning free kick meant that scare wasn’t to be two points lost, as United won their first match since January 1st.

Talking about his goal to the clubs iFollow account, Toney said: “I’m buzzing to have got on the scoresheet.

“The main thing is we have come here and got the three points.”

Josh Morris is Scunthorpe’s designated free-kick taker, but Toney says his persistence in asking to take one paid off dividends.

“I got bullied off the first few! I wasn’t getting bullied off this one – I had a good feeling and I managed to put it into the back of the net.

“The goalkeeper gave me a lot to aim at and I was quite surprised, so I just thought that I needed to get it on target with a bit of pace and it would have a good chance of going in.”

Having spent the second half of last season in North Lincolnshire too, the Newcastle forward has had time to gain a lot of respect for the Iron fanbase, and wants to repay their faith with an abundance of goals.

“They were great last year and I am sure they will be great this year. Hopefully, I can repay them by scoring goals.”

Promotion is thoroughly achievable according to the striker, and the three points on Saturday were a huge step in the right direction, Toney claimed.

“We had lost a couple of games so coming here and getting the three points is a massive step.

I think we can get promotion if we keep doing what we are doing. The disappointment we had last year – the boys will not want that again.”
