Hakeeb Adelakun’s stunning strike sent the Iron into the FA Cup second round on Tuesday night, at the expense of Northampton Town.
The 21-year-old capped off his first half goal with a fantastic performance overall, as United set up a second round tie with local rivals Doncaster Rovers.
Former-Iron loannee and summer transfer target Matt Crooks came closest for the visitors, but United were more than worthy of their victory.
“It was a big relief because it was the first one of my season,” Adelakun told the clubs iFollow account.
“I’m hoping that they will keep rolling in now. I just kept on getting space so as soon as I got into that position I turned out, got a yard and got the shot away.
“At first, I doubted the run a little but then I just kept on going. Eventually, I thought ‘I just need to hit this now’ and thankfully it’s gone in.”
The youngster has played frequently in recent weeks, and hopes his current form can secure his spot in the long-term.
“I think that I have done enough tonight but it’s not up to me. It’s up to the gaffer.
“It doesn’t matter if I’m in the team or not, he will still be helping me, still be pushing me and so I just need to carry on working hard.
“It’s showing but this isn’t the finishing line. I’ve still got loads to do and so I just need to carry on doing what I’m doing, get my head down and work harder.”
