United manager Graham Alexander has confirmed that Sam Mantom suffered a swollen foot during Friday’s 6-0 victory over SV Austria, and will miss tonight’s pre-season match with Sunderland – but looks set to return to training next week.

Mantom’s first season with the club was hampered by injury, but his quality was there to see once he did get a run of games under his belt.

The hopes among Iron fans were that with a full pre-season he would stay fit for larger parts of the coming campaign, so this will come as a minor setback for the player, management, and fans.

There was good news though, as Alexander believes the injury will only put him out of tonight’s fixture, and Saturday’s trip to Luton Town, before he returns to training early-next week.

“Sam Mantom has got a swollen foot from a tackle he took in Austria so he will miss this one.

“He had a scan on Monday and he should be training by next week hopefully. He’s had an injection to get the swelling down, and he should be okay next week.” Alexander said.

Luke Williams is the only other player who is set to miss tonight’s game, as he continues his recovery from an injury picked up whilst on loan at Northampton Town, at the backend of last season.
