AFC Bournemouth home 28/04/2012 Preview

In the reverse fixture at Dean Court

So the Iron head into their final home game of the season on the back of two very disappointing results, however they were disappointing for two seperate reasons. The MK game we were beaten by a much better side, however this wasn’t the case last Saturday. We travelled to Huddersfield for our prenultimate away game of the season, a game most Iron fans will have doubted we could take any points from, and those Iron fans were correct, sadly.
To go to a team sitting 5th in the league and play them off the park for large spells of the game was very impressing. The returning Bobby Grant recieved the vocal support of a quite a few Scunny fans before the game, and he certainly repaid them with an almost perfect display – The only thing he was lacking? – hitting the back of the net, which he was unlucky with after hitting the post and crossbar once. A last minute goal for Huddersfield meant we would take no prize away for our dominance, however with news flooding through of Wycombe failing to beat leaders Charlton that meant it was mathematically impossible for The Chairboys to catch the Iron and thus League 1 status was retained for another year. One last point from the Huddersfield game has to be the stewards who were a disgrace the whole game through. No standing allowed at the back where the vocal fans were despite the fact half of the Huddersfield fans in the stand next to us were stood up, the useless bottlers didn’t have the guts to sit them down but instead decided to abuse young Iron fans including ‘bear hugging’ a 15 year old lad, which had our very own Max Bell escorted from the ground briefly for comments made on this subject.

Bournemouth travel to Glanford park having scored just three times (even one of them was an own goal!) away from home in their last 8 outings and taking just a solitary point. Based on that form it should be a stroll in the park, however being a Scunthorpe fan we all know that will not be the case!
When we travelled to Dean Court back at the start of November we were beaten comfortably 2-0, however we all know the troubles we were going through at this stage in the season and even for a couple of months after. Under the current squad that have secured safety following an impressive run of form since the start of January I highly doubt we will be put to bed as easily as the woeful squad we had back then.

The Iron will be hoping for a return to fitness for key attacking players in The Beast (Jon Parkin) & Conor McAleny who have missed the past couple of games. Also in with a chance of being fit to take place on the bench is Gary Thompson who back when he first gained the injury (which also happened to be a time when he was at the top of his game, typical!) was told he would miss the rest of the season. Thommo will be a welcome breathe of fresh air back into the squad. Despite the good news with injured players, Mozzy will almost certainly miss the game as he has not trained at all yet this week, which again will be a massive miss for Scunny as the games the influential midfielder has played in this year have more often than not resulted in us walking away with at least one point.

With this being the last home game of a 2011-2012 season that never really got started for the Iron, we really need to get a decent crowd for the game on Saturday and prove to Mr.Wharton that if he is willing to pump more money into the club, then we are willing to empty our wallets and travel the country supporting the team. The home attendances this season when we have been flirting in the bottom 4 were poor which is completely understandable, however with the recent turnaround in form they began to rise again. Long may this continue so get down to the game on Saturday and enjoy the final home game of the season. Up the Iron!!
